‘karthik calling karthik’

karthik_calling_karthik_550x422It seems like ‘karthik’ calls himself for this movie to watch. There was a poll going in communites regarding this movie ,

What do u think of karthik calling karthik?

will it be a flop or hit…?
There were only small crowds in movie halls , still My name is khan and 3 idiots are rocking theaters.

The movie itself was a bit of a disappointment though I didn’t expect much. I looked forward to seeing in the unorthodox and brave style she usually portrays and Farhan Akhtar in his logical usual because I enjoy both these roles. Deepika was excellent in Love Aaj Kal and Farhan Akhtar was good in Luck By Chance. As much as I love Farhan Akhtar (I placed two of his films in Bollywood decade top 10), I think his acting is good without being close to great. And that’s fine, you can’t be great at every thing.

Coming to the movie. It had a pleasant first half and an excellent start to the second half. The grip and tension could not be maintained though. It felt like a slow drama evolving in front of you instead of a thriller like it should have been (in the same pace of Johny Gaddar). There was never a moment of pure brilliance or a shot taken which really enthralled you.

The songs except Lehrake Bhalkake were all ok tunes and even though I don’t care much about songs, I expected more here. Ram Kapoor of Rakhi Ka Swayamwar fame was good in his role of Farhan Akhtar’s boss. The mystery behind the movie was not very complex and I figured it out partially very early into the film. I am watching Teen Patti next and I expect it to be the better bet of the two this weekend.

Priyadarshan plans film on AIDS with Aamir Khan

After the warm reception to his just released “De Dana Dan”, Priyadarshan plans to make a film on AIDS with in a way that’s palatable to the public.

He wants to make films for the masses. Even if it’s about the construction mafia “Khatta Meetha” with and Trisha or the stigma attached to inter-caste marriages in a film with Ajay Devgan, Bipasha Basu and Akshaye Khanna, he will speak in the language of the common man.

“De Dana Dan” is a big hit even in Pakistan where it’s running to packed houses in a theatre with shows from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Priyan — as Priyadarshan is popularly known — says the romantic rain song with Akshay and Katrina which had been edited for reasons of length will be restored in the prints from Saturday.

“I’ve never made films for critics. I make my films, even my so-called artistic ones like ‘Kala Pani’ and ‘Kanchivaram’, for a mass audience. Today commercial success is more important for the survival of our film industry than ever before.

“Don’t critics want films to do well? Don’t they want the industry to make money so the movie business can get back on its feet? If audiences want to watch happy films who is going to stop them?”

Priyan says he’ll continue to make the films that connect with the audience.

“I’m a film buff. I understand world cinema. I know about Fellini, Ray and Godard. And Satyajit Ray is one of my favourite directors. But I also understand about the film market. We can’t make the films that audiences don’t come to see.”

Some of his hit movies include “Hera Pheri” (2000), “Garam Masala” (2005), “Bhagam Bhag” (2006) and “Bhool Bhulaiyya” (2007).

So what would Priyan’s future equation with his creativity be?

“Very simple. I will make the films I believe in. I’ve attained success in arthouse and mass cinema. I’ll make what comes naturally to me. Not the films that critics want me to make. I believe in every frame of ‘De Dana Dan’. If some critics haven’t liked it at least they should’ve the grace to admit the common man loves it. Say you don’t like. But don’t make up your mind for the masses, please!”

“I don’t claim to be a great filmmaker. But please take a long hard look at my body of work. Just see how many of my films have connected with the audience.”

De Dana Dan – Review

de dana danLocal news papers promotes De Dana Dan in a very different way, giving a new statement  like ” 5 stars mat dheko – Great entertainment dheko “.

The performance of Akshay leads the laugh riot from the front. But he’s suddenly pushed to the back, much to the detriment of the film. Sadly, Katrina too looks completely out of sorts for most of the film. Just one question: Did someone else dub for her? Amongst the others, it’s Paresh Rawal, Johnny Lever and Suneil Shetty who manage to hold your attention; the rest are too loud, specially Manoj Joshi.Dialogs are mostly silly, hardly funny.

Priyadarshan’s plot is too loose, too long, too scattered to hold your attention. Most of the comedy is slapstick and stems from situational goof-ups.

Pritam’s music isn’t inspired this time. None of the songs have shelf life. The only one which mildly moves you is Paisa, the Katrina-Akshay duet belted by a Punjabi pop band.Unimpressive dance moves by Ganesh Acharya. The fashion aesthete is forgettable too. The girls look ordinary in their dresses and the guys sport the boy-next-door look.
